Holiday Tips for Parents
Here are our holiday tips for parents:
* encourage your child to read daily – take your child to the library; buy them holiday reading books; read both fiction and non-fiction to build their general knowledge
* encourage them to write for pleasure – this might be a journal or diary, or a fantasy, adventure or suspense story
* practice times tables – children should aim to enter Year 3 with all of their times tables; don’t assume that children are practising times tables at school (in our experience, schools that practise daily times tables are in the minority)
* practice touch-typing – this is a critical skill as children progress to higher primary and to secondary school. Year 5 students will need to type for NAPLAN writing
* foster your child’s interests and link them to literacy – e.g. a visit to Perth Zoo might inspire your child to research about endangered animals
